About Sports and the City
Our Story
Sports and the City launched in 2008 as a place for passionate Toronto sports fans to find thoughtful analysis and honest opinion. In a media landscape dominated by hot takes and clickbait, we wanted something different: a space where fans could engage with their teams on a deeper level.
Over the years, we've covered the highs and lows of Toronto sports. We celebrated when the Blue Jays returned to the playoffs in 2015 and mourned when they fell short. We've analyzed countless Maple Leafs trade deadlines and draft days, always hoping this would be the year things turned around.
What We Believe
We believe sports fandom is about more than wins and losses. It's about community, shared experience, and the stories we tell each other. A game isn't just a game—it's a memory you'll share with friends and family for decades.
We believe in honest coverage. That means celebrating the good and criticizing the bad, even when it's uncomfortable. Toronto teams have passionate fans who deserve straight talk, not corporate PR.
We believe in perspective. The Blue Jays' drought matters because we remember 1992-93. The Maple Leafs' struggles hurt because we know what it meant to our parents and grandparents when they last won. Context makes sports meaningful.
What We Cover
- Toronto Blue Jays: From spring training to October (when we make it). Player profiles, trade analysis, historical retrospectives, and game coverage.
- Toronto Maple Leafs: The most storied franchise in hockey, for better or worse. We cover the team with the honesty this fanbase deserves.
- Deep Thoughts: Our signature opinion column. Personal takes on Toronto sports, life as a fan, and everything in between.
- Toronto Sports Scene: The Raptors, TFC, and the broader sports culture of Canada's largest city.

Our Philosophy
We don't do hot takes for the sake of engagement. We don't manufacture controversy. We write what we believe, even when it's unpopular.
Being a Toronto sports fan is hard. The Leafs haven't won the Cup since 1967. The Jays went 22 years between playoff appearances. We've watched stars leave and prospects fail to develop. Through it all, we keep coming back.
That loyalty deserves respect. It deserves coverage that takes fans seriously. That's what we try to provide.
